According to the new regulations issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the students pursuing MBBS must complete the course within nine years of admission.

The gazette notification issued by the NMC on June 2, 2023, noted, “Under no circumstances, the student shall be allowed more than four attempts for the first year (MBBS), and no student shall be allowed to continue the undergraduate medical course after nine years from the date of admission into the course.”

Additionally, the gazette revealed there should be joint counseling for admission to graduate courses in medicine for all medical institutions in India based on the merit list of the NEET-UG, without prejudice to anything stated in the present regulations or other NMC regulations.

The government will appoint a designated authority for counseling. The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) will issue guidelines for common counseling, and the designated officer will carry out the counseling per the published guidelines under section 17.
